Presidents’ Day in Independence: History, Family, and a KC Must-Do
🇺🇸 Presidents’ Day in Independence
In honor of Presidents' Day, we spent an afternoon at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and it did not disappoint.
The exhibits offer a powerful reminder of steady leadership, plainspoken decision-making, and the courage that shapes history. Truman believed the buck stopped with him, while Theodore Roosevelt championed bold action and a strong sense of duty. Both set the bar high for integrity, responsibility, and service.
After leaving the White House, Truman returned home to Independence and chose to live among the neighbors and community that shaped him. Even after leading the nation, he remained deeply connected to the place he loved. It is a meaningful reminder of the importance of roots, service, and community.
This visit carried extra meaning for our family. My father-in-law is Truman, named after President Truman, and our youngest grandson is Theodore, named after President Roosevelt. Their names reflect leaders known for grit, character, and doing what is right.

Make a day of it
While in Independence, we stopped at Cafe Verona, a family-owned favorite on the Square known for its welcoming atmosphere and Italian menu. Afterward, we wandered into a charming boutique across the street, one of the many locally owned shops that make the Square enjoyable to explore.
If you are looking for something to do as the colder weather moves back into Kansas City, add the Truman Library to your list. It is a meaningful local experience that blends history, family connection, and a chance to support small businesses nearby.
